Version

As of 2006-02-12 the devchart contains a version date in the about message of the application. The current version is 2013-04-08. About...

The Massive Devchart 35mm - J2ME Edition is a tiny application containing a huge database with development times for black and white films. The application was written by Jan Keirse and the database was provided by Digital truth Photo

J2ME or Java 2 Micro Edition is the simple version of Java that is found on most recent phones and many other portable devices like PDAs. It is likely to run on most phones produced in the past 2 years.

This site possibly contains some complicated things you might not understand, if you need any help please feel free to contact me at jan.keirse@gmail.com and I will try to help you as much as possible.

How does it work?

You first enter the first characters of the film name and choose the Search menu option. You then get a list of possible films, where you can choose one. When you have chosen the film, you enter the first character of the desired developer's name. You choose search and get a list of developers. Choose your developer. Choose the Asa value you exposed at. After this you get a list of possible options: You see the dilution and temperature. For every option you can get details by choosing Ok.

Requirements

All you need is a device that supports J2ME. Virtually any mobile phone that says it is Java enabled will run this. It was optimized to run on very minimal phones. I personally use it on a Nokia E71

For those who want technical details: you need MIDP 2.0 or higher and CLDC 1.1 or higher. The application size is 135KB

Please mail to jan.keirse@gmail.com if you have succesfully used this on a device, so I can compile a list of known working devices.

Download

If you want to install the application using a computer, you can donwload the installation files: devchart.jar and devchart.jad. Mind that you need both files!.

There used to be a palmos version for the devchart, however this has been discontinued because it required a j2me runtime for palmos that has been discontinued by palm years ago and we no longer have the ability to create new versions.

Installation

If you have a datacable for your mobile phone, or bluetooth or IRDA, the cheapest way is to install this using your computer. If you do not have an application for installing this, have a look at Gammu.

If you have no means of connecting your phone to your computer, the alternative is to use WAP. Any Java enabled phone will also have WAP. How to install an application depends on your mobile. But here's how to do it on the average Nokia:
Choose the menu option Services. You will see an option 'Go to Address'. Choose this. Next you have to enter the address. You need to enter http://jankeirse.free.fr/devchart.jad . After some time the phone will show you some info on my app and ask if you want to install this. Say yes. Installation will probably take some time. Once the application is installed your phone you will be able to run it from the menu Applications -> Select App..

Pricing info...

I wrote this because I wanted it and needed it, not because I wanted to earn money with it. This application is freeware, you do not have to pay me or anyone else to use it.

However if you use this and are happy with it, a little thankyou mail would make me very proud and happy ;-).

Support

As this is a hobby project I can not provide commercial support. However I will do my best to provide any help required related to the application. You can contact me at jan.keirse@gmail.com. For questions related to the data you should go to http://www.digitaltruth.com.

The story behind this...

In the summer of 2005 I had two occasions where I needed unusual development times for B/W film. The first time a friend of mine accidentaly exposed tmax 3200 film at ISO 400. The second time I wanted to expose that same film at ISO 6400. Finding the right times took me various hours of searching the internet.

A couple of weeks after these searches a usenet post pointed someone to http://www.digitaltruth.com. When I saw that website I almost fell of my chair. This was possibly the most usefull site I had discovered in months. There was only one disadvantage. I did not need all this information somewhere on the internet. I wanted it in the darkroom, where I develop film. I follow a photography class and it's in that photography class that I have access to a darkroom, but not to an internet connection.
All I wished at that point was to have this on my mobile (the only device I always have with me). So I started searching for options. I soon discovered that DigitalTruth offered a Palmdoc version of the database. After some time I found some j2me palmdoc readers, but none was free of charge and in any case it would be unusable on a phone.

I didn't think about this for a week or two but then I got back into the thing. I just wanted this on my phone. I had some experience in developing J2ME applications so I decided to make another one. I contacted Digitaltruth and explained my plans. Jon Mided, the owner of Digitaltruth Photo and creater of this wonderful site, told me he was prepared to give me access to the database on the provision that the data would only be used for handheld devices and would not be used for any other purpose. Jon was very cooperative and helpful and about a week after I contacted him, I was actually able to put the first working version of this application on my phone!
